The Hulu series The Handmaid’s Tale, based on Margaret Atwood’s novel of the same name, premiers in the U.S. on Wednesday, April 26. The first three episodes will be released then, with the rest becoming available on a weekly basis. Whether you’ve read Handmaid or not, this is a great opportunity to binge what will hopefully be some good TV.
Whip up the typical handmaid’s breakfast to mark the occasion! It will fuel you up for your Hulu session and help transport you into the world of the show.
Our narrator describes it in Atwood’s 1985 dystopian novel:
“In front of me is a tray, and on the tray are a glass of apple juice, a vitamin pill, a spoon, a plate with three slices of brown toast on it, a small dish containing honey, and another plate with an egg-cup on it, the kind that looks like a woman’s torso, in a skirt. Under the skirt is the second egg, being kept warm.”
In the novel, oranges act as a beacon of hope to our handmaid. Though she was unable to indulge, I see no shame in adding some to your own breakfast. Maybe you’ll appreciate them a little more than usual! Consult a health professional for your vitamin pill. 🙂
Keep a close Eye on what the importance of this breakfast (especially the eggs) might be as you’re watching!
Have you read the book? Will you be watching the new series?
Blessed be the fruit.
