Alice in Wonderland, Queen of Hearts tea party

If you’ve been paying attention, you’ve noticed that I’ve made May into something of an Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland month here at Cask & Quill. The book itself takes place on May 4 and we celebrated with a playing card nail design. Then earlier this week, I showed you the Queen of Hearts tarts and how to make them. I actually ended up putting together a whole Alice-inspired tea party for my mom for Mother’s Day as well. Keep scrolling for more details, photos and links to some of the recipes!

Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland has always been a book of great sentimental value for me. One of the fondest memories of my youth involves having my mom read the story to me and cackling at the bits that I found funny. I was so amused by one scene in particular (where Alice gets stuck in the house) that I’d make her read that portion over and over, laughing harder each time. “There goes Bill!” still brings a smile to my face every time I think of it.

It didn’t take me long to realize that an Alice tea party was exactly on point for a Mother’s Day activity this year. I mean, I was already planning to make the tarts. This was too perfect! I knew my mom would appreciate the sentimental thought behind it and who doesn’t love delicious food and tea?!

Since it was an absolutely gorgeous day in Minnesota, I decided we’d be taking advantage of it and having our tea outside. Not only that, I elected to make two very special iced tea concoctions instead of traditional hot tea.

The theme was hearts, and lots of them. I incorporated Queen-of-Hearts-approved heart-shaped strawberries in sandwiches, salads and even the tea. And of course the tarts!

And naturally we couldn’t get far without some roses to paint red!

Some cucumber “clubs” even made it to the party on a cucumber and fresh dill cream cheese tea sandwich.

For the tea, we had a honey whiskey chamomile iced tea, followed by a strawberry basil earl grey spiked with vodka. Both were incredibly delicious!

List of foods:

cucumber dill cream cheese sandwiches
strawberry basil cream cheese sandwiches
raspberry heart tarts
spinach strawberry salad with poppy seed dressing
apple roses (I used raspberry jam instead of apricot)

Teas:

We had such a fabulous time! The weather was absolutely perfect and my mom seemed to love everything I made and the thought behind it. Success! 🙂
