October Reads 2016

October’s already come to a close! Did you set some goals for your reading last month? My October goals were, perhaps, slightly unrealistic. No–we’ll say optimistic. I definitely did not get everything read this month that I wanted to, but I made some good progress!

My October TBR (To-Be-Read) List:

  1. Stories from Edgar Allan Poe
  2. Stories from H.P. Lovecraft
  3. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
  4. Crooked Kingdom
  5. The Hound of the Baskervilles
  6. The Fire Next Time
  7. Rebecca

For me, this was pushing it. This is much more than I read in a typical month, but I wanted to up my reading game a bit more. Shoot for the stars, as they say… And I did quite a bit better than I thought I might!

Reading Order of the Phoenix

Actual October Reads:

  1. Last half of Six of Crows (thought I’d finish in September and didn’t)
  2. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
  3. Stories from Edgar Allan Poe
  4. The Hound of the Baskervilles
  5. The Legend of Sleepy Hollow (thought this was on my list…read it anyway)
  6. Began Crooked Kingdom

So, really I didn’t do too bad, all told. Order of the Phoenix took me quite a bit longer to get through than I anticipated, but I enjoyed rereading this one very much.

I read a handful of poems and stories from Poe, including my favorites, “The Cask of Amontillado” and “The Masque of the Red Death.” The pair are off-putting to say the least, but in the most magnificent way.

The Hound of the Baskervilles is another favorite that I hadn’t read in years and was thrilled to revisit. It was every bit as good as I remember, if not better. It’s tough to beat Sherlock!

The Legend of Sleepy Hollow is another favorite story that I love to revisit around Halloween. Washington Irving is a master of detailed description that entices rather than bores.

I can hardly believe that I waited nearly a full month to start Crooked Kingdom after finishing Six of Crows. I was almost hesitant to begin when it came time to crack it open. I knew I was going to love it, but I also knew it was going to be a whirlwind and that I’d likely feel empty inside once it was all over. I haven’t finished it yet, but should soon!

Crooked Kingdom

With November already here, it’s time to set a new list of goals! I’m not ready to say goodbye to October, Halloween and the macabre books that come with the season, but such is life.

My November TBR List:

  1. Finish: Crooked Kingdom
  2. The Fire Next Time
  3. The Portable Veblen (buddy read)
  4. The Cozy Life
  5. A selection of Marvel comics
  6. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

I had some others I wanted to read in November, but I’ll be putting on the back burner. I know that the list I’ve got will be more than sufficient to get me through this busy month!

How did you do on your reading goals last month? What’s on your TBR list for November?
